Smoking may dull obese women’s ability to taste fat and sugar

People who smoke tend to eat more high-fat foods. So do obese people. Now, a team of researchers, including M. Yanina Pepino, PhD, at the School of Medicine, has found that obese women who also smoke have a difficult time perceiving fat and sweetness in their food. And that could lead them to eat even more fatty foods.

Author Bynum on campus this week

Ms. Beatrice Hempel, seventh-grade teacher, is new to teaching, newly engaged and newly bereft over her father’s death. She struggles to figure out what is expected of her in life and at work. So begins “Ms. Hempel Chronicles,” the acclaimed second novel by Sarah Shun-lien Bynum. On Tuesday and Thursday, April 8 and 10, Bynum will present a pair of events for The Writing Program in Arts & Sciences.

Brown School honors distinguished alumni

The Brown School bestowed one Distinguished Faculty Award and five Distinguished Alumni Awards during its annual alumni awards celebration dinner recently. Among the five, two alumni were selected as outstanding Graduates of the Last Decade.

Scientists find a molecular clue to the complex mystery of auxin signaling in plants

Plants fine-tune the response of their cells to the potent plant hormone auxin by means of large families of proteins that either step on the gas or put on the brake in auxin’s presence. Now scientists at WUSTL have made a discovery about one of the proteins that may prove key to understanding the entire network.
